In August 2013 my family and I conducted the nineteenth green smoothie retreat. This time it was in Canada. Before green smoothie retreats, we have conducted approximately forty other different kinds of retreats, such as raw food retreats, juice fasting retreats, water fasting retreats and spiritual retreats. Some were weekend retreats, two-, three-, four- and five-day retreats. I noticed that two, three, four and even five days are not enough, mainly because of the detoxing process. When we were doing four or five-day retreats, many of our participants were leaving at the peak of their detoxing process, with headaches, fevers, nausea and other discomforts. Obviously, that was discouraging.

During seven-day retreats, most people complete the first cycle of detoxification and feel significant improvement. They all had discoveries and some profound “aha” moments. In addition to their own healing, people witness thirty or forty other participants reversing some conditions with which they have been suffering for a long time.

Does it make sense to do longer than seven days? I don’t recommend that, because your daily smoothies eventually begin to feel like routine, boring and never ending. Sometimes people choose to go longer than a week, for example in cases where someone’s detox has not finished and they enjoy the process and feel comfortable to continue for longer. In such cases, people individually go for two, three or four weeks on green smoothies. My friend Clent Manich decided to live on green smoothies for an entire year, after his doctor told him that he had only two weeks to live. Seven days is the natural measure of time; the moon cycle is twenty-eight days and one week is exactly a quarter of the moon cycle. This fact has found its place in most traditional religions and philosophies in the world. Here is how the days of the weeklong green smoothie retreat go for most participants, from my personal reflections.

On the first day, everyone is excited and scared at the same time. They are still connected to their work, families and world events through their phone calls and thoughts, emails, etc. It is usually disturbing and somewhat frightening for people to leave the habitual rhythm of life and yield into the new, slower healing mode. For this reason, we usually make an effort to surround our newcomers with maximum attention, delicious green smoothies, uplifting lectures and organize positive entertainment, such as listening to live music or watching a documentary.

On the second day, many are surprised to wake up with headaches and stuffed noses. Usually people get disappointed and some even panic. To comfort our participants, we explain in our presentations the importance of the detox process and encourage them to appreciate and embrace the detox symptoms. By the end of the second day, roughly two-thirds of people develop one or another sign of cleansing.

The third day could be the hardest day of the week for most people. It is understandable because they feel hungry, they feel bad, often slightly depressed and tired. That day, we usually go from person to person and listen to them; trying to engage them in warm dialogues, reassuring them that all this discomfort is a good and normal sign. This is an opportunity for people to carefully watch their personal process of healing: to notice every part of their transformation to understand how the body restores its homeostasis. It is very important not to get distracted from this learning experience, but to consciously observe all the activity that happens within their organism. On that day, we encourage people to share with each other how they feel in detail, and to write about it in their journal.

The fourth day could still be hard for many people, however, there are always a few who have already passed the peak of their detox. They show up to the green smoothie breakfast with a big smile and announce, “I feel like a million bucks!” or “I don’t remember ever feeling so well as now!” Or they state, “The numbness in my left foot that I had for ten years is gone!” Or, “My cravings for smoking disappeared!” Or “I never slept so well in my life!” And so on. On that day, we intensify our exercise program and provide more information in all our classes.

The fifth day is when most people feel profound improvement. They still have minor symptoms of detox, but they notice that their health has positively improved and liked their reflection In the mirror. Everybody experiences the presence of extra energy, clearer thinking, improved vision and ability to concentrate. This is the best day for learning. We encourage people to read more, attend all the lectures, and exercise actively as well as engage in dialogues with all the other participants in order to exchange unique and valuable information.

On the sixth day, most people feel even better. Many people comment that they haven’t felt that great since their teens. They begin to ask many questions; they want to learn more about this cleanse in order to share with others. They feel happy and inspired.

The seventh day is the day of total happiness and love. Usually all people sense the groundbreaking accomplishment on that day. Everyone feels as a hero: “I made it! I believe that my body can heal me!” People are grateful for the amazing experience. They usually comment that the hunger is completely gone and they begin to drink fewer smoothies and feel more satisfied. These observations are extremely important, as many people come to green smoothie retreats with a fear of suffering from not being able to eat habitual food. Contrary to that, by the end of the week most participants feel accustomed to healthy eating. The body becomes used to eating healthy and begins to crave healthy food. People say, “I can do it!” which is more than they initially anticipated from this retreat.

That is why I recommend the seven day green smoothie retreat.

Dear Friends,

When my grandchildren come to visit we love having deep conversations together. We never get tired or bored of these dialogues. Sometimes my grandchildren refuse to watch cartoons, play, or draw, in order to talk about something in a philosophical way. There is never a shortage of topics for us because there is so much I would like to share with them both. For example, last Saturday, we have been discussing different merits of human beings, such as courage, cowardliness, dignity, pride, neatness, and others.

My grandkids were especially interested in the integrity. I explained to them my understanding of integrity. A person with integrity is not able to act in a destructive manner, and is not capable of hurting anyone. We had a long discussion about which action would be considered constructive and not destructive. Curiously, we came to the conclusion that to be a pizza-deliverer would not be a very constructive thing to do, because pizza is not a nutritious kind of food. In order to be constructive, one would have to deliver any kind of nutritious food, that’s all. Then we were trying to imagine the world where all people had integrity.

Today I was happy to hear from my son that my grandson shared his thoughts about integrity at school today. The teacher asked what are the most important qualities of the human. My grandson said, “integrity!” and was able to explain what it meant. Both the teacher and his classmates were very interested to discuss this subject.

I believe it is vital to teach our children to observe, to think critically, and to be healthy, especially in today’s world when so much is happening. I would like to emphasize that todays children will be our tomorrow’s leaders. If you’d like to teach your children to be healthy, consider buying our beautiful children books for them.

Green Kombucha Smoothie

Dear Friends,
I love to experiment and during the last couple of weeks I have been using kombucha as a base for my smoothies. Actually, “kombucha” is not a proper name for this drink since it is the name of a company that sells the drink. The word “Kombucha” comes from Japanese “kombu” – seaweed and “cha”- tea, and means seaweed tea, which does not apply to what people call “kombucha.” A more appropriate name for this drink is “mushroom tea.” But similar to “Xerox” or “Crayola” the name of the brand took off in the place of the product. Depicted in the photo is my own kombucha mushroom that I grow in a gallon glass jar. Making my own costs me next to nothing, where store-bought kombucha can be quite expensive.

Kombucha is very high in glucaric acid, and recent studies have shown that glucaric acid helps prevent cancer. It also contains glucosamines that help prevent all forms of arthritis. Kombucha is said to improve digestion, fight candida, and boost your immunity system through its high levels of antioxidants. Hundreds of thousands of people around the globe are happily consuming green smoothies. My inbox is overflowing with testimonials of amazing recoveries that I receive daily from green smoothie drinkers. We have videotaped testimonials from people who started drinking green smoothies and were able to reverse heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes type II, and many other conditions.

However, as Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “There are as many opinions as there are experts.” For this reason, once in a while I run into counter claims. Below are my answers to some of them.

        1.   Claim: Blending destroys fiber.

My answer: I verified what science has to say about blending fiber. I was able to find several studies that conclude that “particle size of the fiber source did not affect performance.” 1 The most interesting research article I found was from, “Gut,” an international peer-reviewed journal for health professionals and researchers in gastroenterology & hepatology. Volume 37, Issue 2: “Effect of bran particle size on gastric emptying and small bowel transit in humans.” Authors R Vincent, A Roberts, et al, compared bran particles of 2 mm to less than .7 mm.

This study found that both fine and coarse fiber have only 2% difference in performance, favoring the smaller fiber. Moreover, the researchers stated “Fine bran causes less disturbance of gastric physiology than coarse bran” 2 and discussed how finely ground fiber increases nutrient absorption, and reduces bloating, heartburn, and constipation.

        2.   Claim: Blending destroys 90% of nutrients.

In an interview ( two respectable doctors bring a wealth of information on a natural healing. Towards the end of the interview, Dr. Clement states that “blending your veggies using a blender can kill up to 90 percent of the nutrients in 90 seconds.” Next, in contradiction to his own statement he explains, that “vitamins A, E, C; the basic five nutrients are killed in 90 seconds of blending with a high-speed blender.”

There is a big difference between these two statements:

•     blending can kill up to 90 percent of [all] the nutrients;

•     90 percent of the basic five nutrients are killed by blending

There are many studies done in the US, in Netherlands, and in other countries. For example, here is one scientific study, which compares blending and juicing. In the following statement (I have highlighted the most important content.)

“Due to the consumer’s interest in obtaining high levels of phytochemicals, it is important to understand the changes in their levels by common household processing techniques. Therefore, mature Texas “Rio Red” grapefruits were processed by some of the common household processing practices such as blending, juicing, and hand squeezing techniques and analyzed for their phytochemical content by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results suggest that grapefruit juice processed by blending had significantly (P < 0.05) higher levels of flavonoids (narirutin, naringin, hesperidin, neohesperidin, didymin, and poncirin) and limonin compared to juicing and hand squeezing. No significant variation in their content was noticed in the juice processed by juicing and hand squeezing. Ascorbic acid and citric acid were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in juice processed by juicing and blending, respectively. Furthermore, hand squeezed fruit juice had significantly higher contents of dihydroxybergamottin (DHB) than juice processed by juicing and blending. Bergamottin and 5-methoxy-7 gernoxycoumarin (5-M-7-GC) were significantly higher in blended juice compared to juicing and hand squeezing. Therefore, consuming grapefruit juice processed by blending may provide higher levels of health beneficial phytochemicals. 3

From my personal observation, I seriously doubt that blending destroys vitamin C because I witnessed countless times how people who consume green smoothies on a regular basis, tested outstandingly high both in vitamin C and in antioxidants tests.

        3.   Claim: Oxalic acid in spinach and other greens cause kidney stones

To answer this claim, I have written an article where I present lots of citations from original research documents.

About 85% of all kidney stones contain calcium salts, calcium oxalate and/or calcium phosphate. It seems logical to connect calcium oxalate with oxalic acid in some foods, such as spinach, soy, tea, coffee, wheat, and some others. However, you will not find any scientifically documented evidence that oxalic acid in food causes the formation of kidney stones. On the contrary, substantial scientific research in different countries has demonstrated that oxalic acid from food plays an insignificant role in the formation of kidney stones.

        4.   Claim: Fruits are too sweet for you

I completely understand how eating only unripe, conventionally grown fruit might be considered to be harmful to health. Some of you might wonder, what can I do if I don’t have access to high quality fruit? First of all, become aware. Second, go to U-pick farms in the summer and freeze berries and fruit for your winter. Third, talk to your local farmers and see if they can help you find a way to provide you with organic produce. Finally, watch Valya’s presentation on Espalier and harvest your own perfect fruit.

It is my opinion that fruit, if it’s ripe and organic, is an essential part of the human diet. Even in Northern Siberia, where there is a permanent frost, people gather both sweet and sour berries in the summer. However I don’t recommend a completely fruitarian diet because it is not complete. Greens are the most nutritious food on our planet. In my food pyramid greens take the first place and ripe organic fruit takes the second. You may read the rest of this article on my blog.

Everyone should eat more greens. By consuming green smoothies, my body is able to absorb up to two bunches (two pounds) of greens every day. That is why I choose to encourage people to consume green smoothies.

If alternative doctors will fight with each other over non-essential particulars of natural healing, we may only confuse people. Moreover, we may become easy prey for the medical establishment’s criticism. Instead, let us unite on whatever common grounds we share.
