QUESTION: How much green smoothie do you recommend I drink daily?
VICTORIA: In the beginning people tend to drink more green smoothies, sometimes up to two gallons per day depending on how acidic their body pH is. After several months the quantity goes down to 1-2 quarts per day.
QUESTION: Do I have to make fresh green smoothie several times per day?
VICTORIA: Smoothies can stay in the refrigerator for 2-3 days, but fresh is best. As soon as a smoothie is warmed to room temperature, it should be consumed.
QUESTION: How much greens does one really need? I generally consume a head of lettuce. Do you think this is enough?
VICTORIA: One needs fewer greens in the form of green smoothies than in the form of salad, because blended greens assimilate several times more thoroughly then chewed greens. I estimate that if you prefer to eat greens as a salad, you should consume at least two bunches of greens (or 6 packed cups) per day. If you drink your greens in blended form, then one bunch (3 packed cups) will be sufficient per day.
People who have an acidic pH balance in their body could benefit from consuming up to 80% greens in their diet. When they reach a stage of balance, they will notice that they want less greens and less green smoothies, but they will enjoy them more than ever.
QUESTION: It seems you talk about having an entire bunch of chard, or other greens, daily. Yet in your recipes, a smoothie only has 3-5 leaves from an entire bunch. Are you having more than 1 smoothie a day?
ANSWER: The goal is to eventually consume more greens in the smoothie than fruit. However, many of us are not used to consuming large amounts of greens. Also many don’t have adequate hydrochloric acid to digest greens. For this reason, I recommend starting with more fruity green smoothies and slowly using more and more greens. As the body finds out the many benefits of greens, it becomes very excited and starts craving greener smoothies. Experiment with what amount of greens you find palatable and gradually add more greens so that you work up to the equivalent of one average-sized bunch of greens per day.
It is possible that you will start with a fruity green smoothie and progress to extremely green smoothies. Yet, there will be another change later. As you keep consuming green smoothies on a regular basis for many months, you will eventually reduce the total amount of green smoothies that you consume daily.
This happens because the assimilation of nutrients increases and the body can get more nutrients from less smoothies, your body satisfies the most urgent needs for nutrients, it also becomes more alkaline and doesn’t need as much greens as before. Please remember to keep rotating your greens for variety!
QUESTION: How long should I blend my ingredients to make the green smoothie?
ANSWER: I usually blend my greens and fruits for 30-45 seconds. I always start on the low speed and turn it up to high.
QUESTION: I cant afford to buy a Vitamix or a Blendec, can I use a regular blender?
I recently visited Russia, where almost nobody can afford a Vita-Mix blender. However, a lot of people are drinking green smoothies there anyway. The main difference between smoothies made in a high speed blender or a regular blender is in the quality of taste, and the efficiency of assimilation by the body. Vita-Mix, Blendtec or other high speed blenders enable the health seeker to enjoy wonderfully whipped, delicious concoctions, which are quickly assimilated by the body. On the other hand, those who use simple blenders have to put up with some chunks and pieces of unblended greens and fruit skins. These green smoothies may be less smooth but still provide a great deal of greens in one's diet, much more than if people didn't drink them at all. A
QUESTION: What kind of blender do you recommend I use to make green smoothies?
VICTORIA: You may use any blender to make smoothies, however I recommend using the most powerful blender you can find, 1000 watts or more. If you don’t have a powerful blender, you can still make green smoothies and benefit from them, but you will have to chop your ingredients into smaller pieces, blend for longer periods of time, and to put up with some chunks in your smoothie. A regular blender may have a motor that burns out quickly if you are using it to make green smoothies every day. A smoothie prepared in a high-speed blender is smooth in consistency, and will be assimilated better by the body. For those who live in the United States I recommend any model of the Vita-Mix blender. To purchase one free of shipping costs, please visit my website at:
If you live outside of the United States, I recommend another high-speed blender called, Blendtec, which is priced reasonably for international sales.
QUESTION: Can I freeze smoothies or will they be less nutritious frozen?
VICTORIA: I have never frozen my greens, but if I lived in a northern country and had, for example, a large harvest of spinach, I would freeze it and use it over time. Frozen greens will still be more nutritious than cooked greens. However, if you have access to fresh greens, they are significantly more nutritious and tastier than frozen.
QUESTION: Since I started drinking green smoothies my stool became green. Is it normal?
VICTORIA: When the stomach acid is low, one may find pieces of undigested food in the stool and color of it may reflect the color of the food consumed such as red from beets, green from green smoothie, etc. After daily consumption of green smoothies, the body receives plenty of nourishment and the level of stomach acid begins to normalize. Eventually you will always observe the same stool despite of your food intake. Normal stool should be light-brown in color, odorless, well formed and not sticking to the toilet. It leaves the body easily with no straining or discomfort.

QUESTION: Why is it so important that humans model their diet after chimpanzees? From my understanding, they only live an average of 50 years. They are usually riddled with parasites too.
VICTORIA: Chimpanzees are genetically the closest creatures to humans. They share 99.4% of genes with humans. That is why, unfortunately, chimpanzees are used for medical research. However, chimpanzees have often demonstrated such a strong immunity, that doctors were not able to infect them with HIV or hepatitis C. In my book, I brought up the point that instead of making chimps ill with human diseases, researching how they are able to stay healthy may reveal immensely valuable information on human health. In captivity, chimpanzees do live much longer than in the wild because they are guarded against accidents and environmental dangers.
Chimpanzees are not only healthy, but have the ability to intuitively find and use healing herbs. Scientists from the Jane Goodall Institute described in their research that chimpanzees are familiar with natural ways of parasite control by eating medicinal herbs. On the other hand, any colonic therapist will tell you how so many humans are laden with all kinds of parasites.

How come no one talks about the awful detox that green smoothies cause? Every time I try to do just a large glass full I get a urninary track infection. Which is extremly painful. I can drink lots of home made juice including wheat grass and have no problems at all. But then I have been juicing for the past 30 years.
Detox is common and spoken about, however it is different for everyone and difficult to diagnose. I will try and dig up some articles to post on the blog, however we are wary of giving advice on detox, as we don’t want to misdiagnose or give medical advice.
A urinary track infection from detox in not common, but it is possible, I know some people who have experienced it. The most important thing is to drink lots of water. The infection and detox symptoms should clear after 3-4 days, but for some people its longer. Cranberry juice, fasting and continuing with green smoothies or green juices will ultimately do your body more good than harm.
I bought a vita-mix and have been blending and using recipe suggestions form the green smoothie revolution book. I place extra smoothie in glass mason jars in the fridge right away. I have been noticing that they are get oxidized quickly – the color changes and they start looking muddy pretty quickly – in an HOUR. What am I doing wrong? Everything I have read in Victoris’a books and on this website suggests that green smoothies should stay fresh for 2-3 DAYS in a cooler or refrigerator. Any advice or suggestions or explanations? Am I doing more harm than good by having muddied smoothies?? I would appreciate your help! Thanks!
The texture and the color would depend on what fruits you are using. My smoothies sometimes separate when I use fruit like apples. If your smoothies taste fresh they should be ok.
Does anyone know if we can overdose on vitamin’s A,K,E, and D that our bodies cannot flush out. All the greens seem to have very large amounts of these vitamins and if we drink 2-3 quarts a day is it too much?
Charleen – Most of the population is deficient in vitamins and has trouble absorbing them due to toxicity. You can read about this in ’12 Steps to Raw Food’. Victoria explains that since the industrial revolution deficiency has increased with each generation. One of the reason we do cleanses is to eliminate toxicity so the body can absorb more nutrients.
It is best to consume vitamins and minerals from a fresh food source because the body’s elimination system is able to cope with balancing natural substances. I think it’s wonderful that greens have such large amounts of natural vitamins, its better than consuming vitamins in the form of supplements. Victoria has written, “When consumed, supplements enter our body in huge, manufactured concentrated doses, and any extra nutrients create extra work for the elimination system”.
Trust your body when eating fresh foods and listen to your raw food cravings, this will be your bodies way of telling you what you need more of. Most peoples bodies crave more greens once they start the smoothies, this has to be a good sign:)
Can someone tell my why broccoli is not listed as part of the greens that are commonly used in smoothies? I always thought broccoli was one of the most nutritious veggies. Thanks.
Also, I am very new at this and don’t want to spend a ton of money on greens that I may not like in a smoothie. We are not very advanced in my household. We have tried spinach, kale, and spring mix. Can you tell me which greens you suggest to begin with that are pretty mild and would be easy on beginner palates? Thank you.
Sorry, again all this is new so I have so many questions!! Victoria says to drink the smoothie when it gets to room temperature but I like it iced. Is there a reason she suggests to drink it at room temperature?
No Problem Kelly – You can drink the smoothie iced if you prefer.
Kelly – you could try chard, romaine or red lettuce and beet tops. Chard is one of my favorites. To become more adventurous you could start using dandelions by adding a small amount to a smoothie made predominately with a green you like, such as spinach.
Kelly – Broccoli is not a leafy green. . Greens should not be placed in the same category as vegetables, you can read about that here http://greensmoothiesblog.com/greens-a-new-food-group/. Broccoli is very good for you, especially raw, but it is not wise to combine it with fruits as broccoli contains starch. Leafy greens are the most nutritious food on the planet. In the following link Victoria explains why greens are the most important and the prime source of nutrition http://greensmoothiesblog.com/why-are-greens-good-for-me/
Emily thank you for all your answers!! One last question – can I just pick dandelions from my yard?? And can I use the flower and the green part or just the green?
Really, thank you so much for getting back to me so fast.
Before your response today I grabbed collard greens at the store so i am hoping they will be good too!
Hi Kelly – If you think your yard is safe, for example, there are no sprays on your property or close neighbors, then yes you can use the dandelions from your yard. Free Wild Greens! You can read about dandelions here http://greensmoothiesblog.com/dandelions-with-sergei-boutenko/.
Collards are great! Here is a recipe from Victoria’s book Green Smoothie Revolution
1 mango, 1 kiwi, 1 cup collard greens, stems removed, 4 strawberries, 1 sprig basil (optional), 1 cup water
after faithfully drinking green smoothies (70% veggies, 30% fruit) for breakfast and lunch for ten days and walking five miles a day plus only eating a lean protein/ steamed veegies dinner of about 400 calories at night, I was dissapointed t have only lost 1/2 pound! I only need to loose about 15- 20 pounds and have always been active but my diet wasn’t that great. I knew I could do better. So when I committed to following the green smoothie lifestyle, I was hoping for some significant weight loss. Has anyone else experienced such a small weight loss in their beginnings?
Dear Rebecca, I can understand that you must feel disappointed. You put in a huge effort and made some big changes, of course you expect to see the results. Some people don’t lose the weight quickly because there body holds a lot of fluids. In a recent project we found that when people were doing a lot of exercise they gained mussel which weighs more. The exercise that was recommended (by Dr Donato at the Dolphin Institute) was half cardio and half aerobic.
How did your body feel? Was your skin starting to glow and were you feeling more toned? I think how you feel and the positive change in your appearance is more important than what the scales say. If this is a big change for your body, I would not be surprised if the weight started to fall off in the second week.
Can I use the broccilli leaves out of my garden, in my greens smoothies ? Do you know much about eating right for your blood type. When i was young i never liked bananas now that i have very poor stomach acid i don’t mind them and they taste great in my smoothies, but when reading info about eating right for your blood type it says keep away from bananas and mangoes, the two tastiest fruits. What do i do?
What about using local fresh coconut water in place of regular water? I use 2 cup of it and add one cup of water to a large blendtec blender jar each day. Is this OK to do?
Rich – Yes, you can use fresh coconut water, especially if you are lucky enough to have it in your local area!
Hi, I have been trying the green smoothies with water according to the recipes. I am used to making smoothies with almond milk. Is that okay to use while my taste buds transition? Should I take out the bananas (if they are included in a recipe) use the almond milk. Any help would be appreciated.
OK I have been on green smoothies since July 27th and I have lost weight and I am sleeping better and I have less headaches, but can you tell me why I have extream joint pain, weakness and no energy? I also seem to be itchy.
I rotate my green to at least 7-8 days before eating the same one. I am also taking B-12 and I am drinking about 2 quarts of smoothies a day.
Pam – If almond milk is the only way you can drink the greens then it is ok to use while your body transitions, however it is better to make the green smoothies just with water. Victoria does not like to encourage people to consume too many nuts. I don’t think you need to take out a banana unless you want to for taste reasons.
Dear Charleen – I am unable to give you medical advice. Please continue with your own research and experimenting and seek professional advice if necessary.
I am curious about using the LEAVES only (not the florets) from Broccoli Rabe (also called Italian Broccoli or Rapini)—they are green leaves—do these contain starch also???
Tammy – You can use the leaves of Broccoli Rapini
Hi, Can I substitute green kale for purple kale?
Carla – yes, they are similar in taste.
could oprahs’ daily green drink (she uses a juicer) be done as a smoothie in a blender as below …anyone?
Servings: Makes 2 to 2 1/2 glasses
Ingredients
Oprah’s Green Drink
3 stalks celery
2 cucumbers
1 apple
1 chunk fresh ginger
1 cup fresh spinach
Directions
Combine all ingredients in a juicer and blend until smooth.
Yes, just blend it in a blender rather than juice. I would add more spinach to get a good amount of leafy greens (4 handfuls).
Hi Canali – Yes, just blend it in a blender rather than juice. I would add more spinach to get a good amount of leafy greens (4 handfuls).
Hello Emily,
I’ve been having a green smoothie every morning for the past one week. I’m loving it so far. I wss wondering if it has an effect on menstruation. Mine has been pretty regular but it came a week earlier this time.. I’m curious to know if this is common.
Thanks!
Hi Ros,
That’s interesting. I have not heard of menstruation arriving early, but that does not mean it’s not uncommon. I find that my cycle can sometimes change depending on what the moon is doing and if I’m around a group of women. It’s amazing the way that happens!
I thought you may find this testimonial interesting. This woman was able to control her heavy mental cycle from drinking green smoothies.
http://greensmoothiesblog.com/green-smoothie-testimonial-menstrua/.
I KNOW about craving even more greens.Recently I started using romaine lettuce leaves for sandwiches instead of bread.. Tuna salad rolled up in a leaf… of even some organic peanutbutter rolled up in romaine:) or a few slices raw cheese
I started Green smoothies in April 2010, Viktoria is correct your body starts craving the good LIVE food and rejecting the dead or cooked more and more.
I just wish I known this 30 years ago
To Rebecca
I have had a serious weight problem for a long time, and going green has not helped me either. even though I changed my diet (- exercising has NEVER worked for me, I got more tired, exhausted actually than anything else) No bread but maybe once a week, 90% vegetable smoothies, (I do not like sweet any more, I started 50-50) and the smoothies have replaced breakfast and lunch 7 days a week !But I feel so much better now and that alone is good enough !
I did really good this summer with the green smoothies after reading Victoria’s book. Now that it is winter I have stopped because my body is craving WARM foods. How do you stay interested and continue with the green smoothies in the winter? Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks for the feedback!
Hi!
I’m discovering the world of smoothies and this Q/A post is wonderful. I mostly drink fruit and spinach smoothies, but I think I’m going to give a try to some different veggetables.
Nice work, Victoria!
You may like to try savory green smoothies and soups for winter. I also like to add ginger (very warming) with orange to my winter green smoothies, this post may help you http://greensmoothiesblog.com/ginger-in-green-smoothies/
can you use the leaf of a broccoli plant in your green smoothies??
I have a family history of kidney stones and am worried that I might get stones if I consume too much spinach or other leafy greens. What is your take on this??
I don’t see why not.
My daughter tells me I should use a hand grinder to prepare wheat grass. I have been using my Vita mix with a cup of water. Do I get more nutrition using the hand grinder?
Jamie, I used a lot of broccoli leaves (even stalks) fresh from the garden during the summer. They made the smoothies delicious! I couldn’t see why they had to go on the compost heap… Right now I have a lot of Jerusalem artichokes, and they are good in smoothies too.
I have been drinking green smoothies for about a month now and haven’t noticed any increased energy or weight loss. If anything i’m super bloated and have really painful gas. My pants are even tighter now from the bloating. I almost feel pregnant again my belly is so big. Lol. I started out throwing every green I had in the blender, but now after reading this site i’m rotating 1 to 2 greens for about 3 days before switching to a new one. Am I doing something wrong? I really like the taste and I know I’m getting the nutrients I need. I even have my 2 and 3 year old dringking them. Any suggestions?
Also I forgot to mention that my face is really broken out too. The green smoothies should help with complexion not make it worse right? I also wanted to ask, can you use sprouts in a green smoothie? Thanks.
Should the green smoothies be used as meal replacements? Or can I still eat a healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner and consume the smoothie throughout the day? Or will this put me on calorie overload so I should use it to replace a meal? thanks
Victoria,
I remember reading in your book about the alkaloids buiding up because you didn’t change your greens originally. Could I switch greens every two to three days is that often enough or should I change my choice of greens daily when making the smoothies?

I’ve been drinking Green Smoothies for the last three weeks and enjoying figuring out what/how to blend. Just watched a video with your son saying NOT to blend starchy vegetables like carrots or broccoli into the smoothies.
Many of the recipes I’m trying from other green smoothie “experts” include carrots, so I’m just wondering if you still believe that and if I’m doing myself harm by including them. I really like the sweet taste they bring.
Thanks,
Adam
Hi,
In the recipe section of Victoria’s book 12 steps to raw foods, she lists 5 flavors/ 5 strong flavors as one of her ingredients in her basic formula for soups, nut burgers and dressing. What are these 5 flavors?
Also, I live in Canada where we have very cold winters and I have trouble drinking green smoothies because I get cold. What do you recommend aside from the ginger which I do not like?
Do you have any recommendations for people who suffer from hypoglycemia and need the added protein. I know Victoria doesn’t recommend eating nuts.
Thanks,
Pascale
i started drinking green smoothies 2 months ago, I have one every morning and was feeling great, lost weight, skin looked great, felt wonderful, but within 8 weeks I was in the hospital with my first kidney stone, which my doctor thinks is from the spinach I consumed everyday, I googled “can eating to much spinach cause kidney stones?” wow was I surprised! I love my smoothies and something I thought was so good for me ended up causing a painful problem, any suggestions?
Can anyone tell me what I can do with mustard greens? they looked so pretty in the store but were awful when I put them in a smoothie. Also can a person eat too much spinache I don’t want to get kidney stones like someeone who posted here.
