1. Green smoothies are very nutritious. The ratio in them is optimal for human consumption; about 60% ripe organic fruit mixed with about 40% organic greens.
2. Green smoothies are easy to digest. When blended well, most of the cells in the greens and fruits are ruptured, making the valuable nutrients easy for the body to assimilate. Green smoothies literally start to get absorbed in your mouth.
3. Green smoothies, as opposed to juices, are a complete food because they still have fiber. Consuming fiber is important for our elimination system.
4. Green smoothies belong to the most palatable dishes for all humans of all ages. With a ratio of fruits to veggies as 60:40 the fruit taste dominates the flavor, yet at the same time the greens balance out the sweetness of the fruit, adding a nice zest to it. People who eat a standard American diet enjoy the taste of green smoothies. They are usually quite surprised that something so green could taste so nice.
5. A molecule of chlorophyll closely resembles a molecule of human blood. According to teachings of Dr. Ann Wigmore, “consuming chlorophyll is like receiving a healthy blood transfusion”. Many people do not consume enough greens, even those who stay on a raw food diet. By drinking two or three cups of green smoothies daily you will consume enough greens for the day to nourish your body, and all of the beneficial nutrients will be well assimilated.
6. Green smoothies are easy to make, and quick to clean up after. In contrast, juicing greens is time consuming, messy, and expensive. Many people abandon drinking green juices on a regular basis for those reasons. To prepare a pitcher of green smoothie takes less than 5 minutes, including cleaning.
7. Green smoothies have proven to be loved by children of all ages, including babies of six or more months old. Of course you have to be careful and slowly increase the amount of smoothies to avoid food allergies.
8. When consuming your greens in the form of green smoothies, you are greatly reducing the consumption of oils and salt in your diet.
9. Regular consumption of green smoothies forms a good habit of eating greens. After a few weeks of drinking green smoothies, most people start to crave and enjoy eating more greens. Eating enough greens is often a problem with many people, especially children.
10. While fresh is always best, green smoothies will keep in cool temperatures for up to three days, which can be handy at work and while traveling.
The ten health benefits of green smoothies was fist published by Victoria Boutenko & The Raw Family as Ode to Green Smoothie in January 2005

I just started dringking Green Smoothies about a week ago…and I absolutely love them. The thing is I follow the recipe to the exact nd yet I do not get the amount that the book says it yields,,,The recipes I am making are from your book, the Green Smoothie revolution, which I think is a wonderful book. So due to me not getting the amount stated, what is it I am doing wrong. For example it says yields 2 quarts which is 16 cups yet I am getting only about 3 to 4 cups.
Also srining green smoothies everyday, where is the protein coming from? Thank you
I’m not sure why your smoothies are not making the amount recommended. Perhaps the bunches of greens in your store are smaller. 4 cups is still a good amount, especially if they are packed with greens.
To learn about the abundance of protein in greens please read this article

16 cups is actually a gallon. A quart is 32 oz., so you should get about 7 to 8 cups in the recipe:)
Victoria, you have helped me so much. I have been doing green smoothies for 12 days. I have been dieting since the 1st of August and I have lost 15 pounds so far. I have 165 more pounds to lose but I know if I follow your plan I will get it off and be healthy. I fix a smoothie in the morning with a cup of carrot juice, 1/4 cup of raw oatmeal, a small apple, a banana, 1 teaspoon of spirulina and 1 teaspoon of chlorella, 1 tablespoon of flaxseed meal. For lunch I have a cup of green Naked juice, one apple, one banana, one other kind of fruit, handful of kale, small handful of spinach, a few turnip leaves. I change up the greens for parsley, red lettuce, whatever I can find at the grocery. I eat beans or a small broccoli and cautiflower salad at night. I am getting around 1200 calories. I want so much to finally get this weight off. Thank you for being a friend and helping so many.
Congratulations Pat! It sounds like you are on the right path with a fantastic meal plan. It’s nice to see you are not eating too many nuts:) Please let us know how you go.
Have a friend with late stage ovarian cancer. Because of the grave circumstances, she chose not to go the route of chemotherapy and wanted to do juicing. She went to a clinic in West Palm Beach, Hippocrates Health Institute, but she was going through such a severe detox she quickly “quit” the process and went home. While there, they told her no fruit for two years as cancer feeds and grows off of sugar, including natural sugars in fruits. So if she were to drink Green Smoothies…can she not add fruit? I don’t think she would be able to stomach just a smoothie with greens alone. Thanks!!! I appreciate anyone’s response that may have experience with cancer and greens smoothies…I can be reached at tams68@hotmail.com. Thanks!
Tammy –
I am not able to advice on if your friend should eat fruits or not. If I were her I would do my research, chose a method and stick to the guidelines. Hippocrates is great alternative, I would like to also recommend looking into methods used at The Gerson Institute http://www.gerson.org/ and reading any books from the Gersons.
If you haven’t already watch this film http://ravediet.com/?PARTNER=1165
Greens are importnat for people with cancer. Lots of wheatgrass, green juices and smoothies.
Little mistake there. There’s no such think as a mollecule of blood. There’s haemoglobin, there’s albumines, there’s pheritine, O2 molecules, Co2 mollecules, Sodium, pottasium, chlorine, water, immunoglobulines (about 5 diferent kinds of them and each kind has about a million variants)…i believe green smoothies are healthfull and beneficial, but dont abuse the science, please.
Brilliant, cheers, I will visit again now.
I definitely love your article. Great work!
Thanks for clarifying Mateja. I think Victoria is referring to the teaching and terms used by Anne Wigmore when she refers to a molecule of blood. I know she simplifies the science so that the majority of people can understand what she is talking about. This simple point would get very complicated if she used all of the correct scientific terms and related it to chlorophyll.
Enjoyed looking at this, very good stuff, thankyou !!!
I’m still learning from you, as I’m trying to achieve my goals. I absolutely love reading everything that is posted on your website.Keep the tips coming. I liked it
This is suppose to be a list of 10 health benefits. Really!
Thank you from all the great info about green smoothies.
What are your thoughts on using the big container of “mixed greens” such as “mixed spring greens?” Wouldn’t this eliminate storing and rotating so many different types of greens?
Help!! My girlfriend turned me on to green smoothies… her version. I just happen to come across this blog and realize that what I’ve learned is wrong. One of her smoothies consists of kale, collard, cabbage, parsley, cucumber, celery, red bell peppers, zucchini, turnips, carrots, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, basil, mint, banana, apples, pears, persimmons, and grapes. She drinks this continuously until she finishes all her produce (approximately 1 week) and then starts again, without any alterations.
I guess my question is. . . where do I start? How do I learn the correct principles of a green nutritious drink. This talk of toxicity scares me.
I am so very grateful for a friend giving me your book to read. All of your information rings true for me n I look forward to optimal health. My body is singing.
Thanks again
I have been making smoothies for a few weeks and have noticed my sinus infections have disappeared and I crave them.
But yesterday I read a post by a famous doctor saying eating too much fruit is bad for you because you are ingesting too much fructose and fructose feeds cancer cells.
I then looked it up in the web and found a lot of information which more or less said not to eat more than 5 fruit and vegs a day.
Do you agree? Because I think I’m having much more than 5 a day. And a raw diet is way much more than that.
Thanks and Hi from Spain!!

My 3 children are allergic to some raw fruits, (mainly apples, pears and plums) and seem to be developing more recently (watermelon and peaches). Have you had any success with the green smoothies eliminating fruit allergies?
I am encouraged to continue healthy eating, and improvement by using more greens in my smoothies than I was before.
I bought 6 bags of apples at the local small grocery store today and the cashier asked me if this type of apple was good. I was shocked, and she said she never eats fresh apples, only apple pie.
Later I took a loaf of homemade whole wheat bread to a neighbor, and she told me they never eat anything they could make “from scratch”. Yikes! How the world needs educating!
I understand that I can freeze greens without cooking. How long will they last in the freezer?
Thanks,
Linda
