Victoria Boutenko came to the USA with her family in 1990. When they all fell ill with life threatening diseases, Victoria sought out alternative health paths and discovered the raw food lifestyle. What brought Victoria to the raw food lifestyle was that her whole family, Russian immigrants relishing the abundant food in their new American home, became overweight and sick. Her first book, Raw Family, tells the story of the problems they faced– they had been desperately ill with serious diseases, including juvenile diabetes, arrhythmia, hyperthyroid, asthma, and arthritis– and how Victoria began to research alternatives when conventional medicine was not helping them. In 1994, by radically changing their diets to 100% raw food, all four family members went from desperation and sickness to healing and happiness.
Victoria created the green smoothie because in 2004, the family noticed that their health had reached a plateau and that there was something missing from their raw diet. Seeking the perfect human diet, Victoria Boutenko studied the eating habits of wild chimpanzees. Chimpanzees share an estimated 99.4% of genes with humans, but their diet is dramatically different from ours. The most glaring difference is that chimpanzees consume significantly more green leaves than humans. They consume these greens in conjunction with fruit. Based on these observations, Victoria perfected the basic green smoothie recipe: 60% fruit and 40% greens, blended with a little water. Green leafy vegetables contain amino acids, vitamins, essential fatty acids and minerals. The touch of sweetness in the fruit enables anyone to consume large amounts of greens in a delicious way. By blending leafy greens and fruit, the body can absorb these vital nutrients efficiently, without losing valuable fiber.
Victoria Boutenko’s book Green for Life has revolutionized the health movement. Translated into over 18 different languages, it quickly spread the idea that green smoothies are the key to gaining control over your own health.
Several books and films produced by the Raw Family have become raw food classics. The family share their raw food journey in their first book Raw Family. In 2000 came 12 Steps to Raw Foods, an insightful look at the addictive nature of cooked food and powerful methods for staying raw. Victoria’s award-winning bestseller Green for Life was later followed by Green Smoothie Revolution, containing over 200 recipes plus answers to frequently asked green smoothie questions.
